A common question after a workplace injury
One of the first questions people ask before booking a WorkCover physiotherapy appointment is whether they need a claim number first. It’s a fair question, since the answer isn’t always straightforward.
What a claim number is
A claim number is issued once your workers compensation claim has been lodged with an insurer or claims agent. It’s used to link your treatment costs to your specific claim, so providers can bill correctly and your treatment is tracked against your case.
Do you need one before your first appointment?
In many cases, you can still book and attend an initial physiotherapy appointment even without a claim number yet, particularly if your injury has only just occurred and your claim is still being processed. It’s worth calling our clinic first to discuss your specific situation, since requirements can vary.
- If you have a claim number, bring it along with your claims agent details
- If you don’t have one yet, let our reception team know when you book
- Your certificate of capacity from your GP is also important documentation to bring
Quick tip
If you’re unsure about your claim status, your employer or the insurer handling your claim can usually confirm your claim number over the phone.
What happens if your claim is later declined
If a claim ends up not being accepted, alternative arrangements for payment may need to be discussed, which is why it’s worth understanding your situation as early as possible. Our team can talk through the general options available.
A little clarity upfront about your claim status can save confusion further down the track.
Getting started
Whether or not you have a claim number yet, don’t let that alone delay seeking treatment for a workplace injury — call our clinic and our team can help you understand the best way to proceed.
What if my employer hasn’t lodged a claim yet?
If your employer hasn’t yet lodged your claim, it’s worth following up with them directly, since timely lodgement helps avoid delays in accessing treatment. If you’re unsure of the process, your union, if you have one, or the relevant insurer can also provide guidance.
In the meantime, our clinic can still generally provide an initial consultation, and our team can advise on the best way to manage billing until your claim number is confirmed.
Keeping records from the start
From your very first appointment, keeping a simple record of dates, treatment received, and any communication with your employer or insurer can be genuinely useful if any questions arise later in your claim.
Working with reception
Our reception team manages WorkCover bookings regularly and can help clarify what information is needed at each stage of your claim, so you don’t need to navigate the process entirely on your own.
What information insurers typically need
Beyond your claim number, insurers generally want details such as the date and circumstances of your injury, your employer’s details, and updates from your treating doctor confirming your diagnosis and capacity. Having this information organised can help speed up both the claims process and your access to ongoing treatment.
If you’re ever unsure what specific information is still outstanding for your claim, your claims agent can usually provide a clear checklist, and our clinic can help make sure any information we’re responsible for providing is submitted promptly.
