Why clear goals matter

Setting clear allied health goals helps your NDIS plan work harder for you. Goals give your treatment direction, help track meaningful progress, and provide useful information for plan reviews with the NDIA.

How goal-setting typically works

At your first appointment, your AHPRA-registered physiotherapist or other allied health provider will ask about what matters to you — this might be reducing pain, improving mobility, building strength for daily tasks, or working toward a specific activity like returning to a hobby or managing a particular routine.

  • Goals are specific to you, not generic templates
  • They’re generally broken into shorter-term and longer-term objectives
  • Progress toward goals is reviewed regularly during your treatment
  • Goals can be adjusted as your needs or circumstances change

Connecting goals to your NDIS plan

Your allied health goals should relate to the broader goals outlined in your NDIS plan. Your provider can help document progress in a way that’s useful for plan reviews, giving your planner a clear picture of how allied health support is helping you work toward your goals.

Quick tip

Think about what “success” would look like for you in everyday terms — for example, being able to manage stairs more comfortably, or sit through a full workday — rather than only clinical measures.

Reviewing and adjusting goals

Goals aren’t set in stone. As you progress, your provider will check in on how things are going and adjust your goals and treatment plan as needed, particularly around the time of your NDIS plan review.

Good goals turn allied health support into a clear, trackable plan rather than an open-ended series of visits.

Working with your broader team

If you have a Support Coordinator or other allied health providers involved, our team can help make sure your goals are aligned across your care team, so everyone is working toward the same outcomes.

Making goals measurable

Where possible, it helps to frame goals in a way that can be tracked over time — for example, being able to walk a certain distance comfortably, or manage a specific daily task with less difficulty. This makes it easier for both you and your provider to recognise genuine progress, even when it happens gradually.

Your allied health provider can help translate broader NDIS plan goals into specific, practical objectives for your sessions, bridging the gap between the language of your plan and the day-to-day work you do together.

Involving your support network

If you have family members, carers or a Support Coordinator involved in your care, keeping them informed about your allied health goals can help create consistency across different parts of your support, and means everyone is working toward the same outcomes.

Documenting the “why” behind a goal

Beyond the goal itself, it helps to capture why it matters to you personally — for example, wanting to walk to the local shops independently. This context can help your provider design sessions that feel meaningfully connected to your life, not just abstract exercises.
